The Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III displays works by outstanding Russian artists and sculptors in the halls of the Mikhailovsky Palace, where Russia's first museum of national art opened on March 7, 1898. Today, the Russian Museum houses approximately 370,000 works of Russian art, housed in three other magnificent buildings in imperial St. Petersburg: the romantic Mikhailovsky Castle, the sumptuous Marble Palace, and the 28th-century Stroganov Palace.
