Episode 1
Nature's Playlist
Sound is one of nature’s greatest secrets - an invisible force that connects, guides, and protects.
From the deepest oceans to the highest mountaintops, animals have evolved astonishing ways to create, detect, and interpret sound in ways that we’re only beginning to understand. Some send seismic rumbles through the ground, others navigate pitch-black skies and deep, murky waters using echoes, and a few even sing secret high-pitched songs beyond human hearing. Every chirp, click, or rumble tells a story of survival, of communication, of exploration. But in a world filled with noise, how do animals make sense of it all? Whether they’re hunting, hiding, flirting, or fighting, nature’s listeners have developed extraordinary tools to tune in - revealing a hidden soundscape where hearing isn’t just a skill, it’s a superpower.
Episode 2
Now You See Me
Think you’ve got good eyesight? Think again.
From a primate with eyeballs heavier than their brains to snakes that sense heat, ‘Wild Senses – Now You See Me’ dives into the spectacular world of animal vision. We trace the weird evolution of sight, from basic light sensors to colour vision that’s perfect for spotting fruit, avoiding predators, and impressing with a flashy face or bottom. But vision’s also about not being seen. Tigers may look orange to us, but to colour-blind prey, they’re perfectly camouflaged. With drones and 3D-printed snakes, we reveal how adders stay hidden. From UV-detecting birds of prey to thermal-sensing vipers, eight-eyed spiders to robins seeing Earth’s magnetic field, vision isn’t just a sense, it’s a superpower. So, what aren’t we seeing?
Episode 3
Feel the Difference
Touch is one of the most fundamental senses in the animal kingdom, yet some creatures take it to extraordinary levels.
From the deep oceans to dense jungles, animals have evolved remarkable ways to sense the world through touch. Sharks detect hidden prey using electroreception, crocodiles feel their surroundings through specialised skin sensors, and whiskered hunters follow invisible trails to find food. Whether dodging danger, navigating murky waters, or forming strong social bonds, these animals demonstrate that touch isn’t just a surface-level skill - it’s the key to unlocking hidden signals in their world. As scientists continue to uncover these extraordinary abilities, we gain a deeper understanding of just how much of the unseen these creatures can truly feel - harnessing a powerful advantage in the struggle for survival.
Episode 4
Chemical Conversation
We often think sight and sound rule the animal world, but for many creatures, it’s all about taste and smell.
In ‘Wild Senses – Chemical Conversation’, we dive into the invisible language of scents and flavours that guide survival, communication, and some seriously strange behaviours. From wolverines sniffing out avalanche-buried meals to dogs detecting disease, and salmon smelling their way across oceans, it’s a sensory world beyond our imagination. Sharks steer with their nostrils, catfish taste with their skin, and corpse flowers fake the scent of death. Even trees like acacias fight back with bitter flavours and chemical warnings. From salty-snack-loving macaques to stink-fighting lemurs, this episode tunes into the chemical conversation nature’s been having all along.
